Alissa Kleist and Ruaidhrí Lennon

14th May – 4th June 2009

From The Inside Out

Ruaidhri Lennon & Alissa Kleist, Transfigures Alissa Kleist, Origin of the Species, Mixed Media

Limerick Printmakers Studio & Gallery are very pleased to present, From The Inside Out, an exhibition of new works by Alissa Kleist and Ruaidhrí Lennon from Thursday 14th of May to Thursday the 4th of June 2009. Breda Lynch, Head of Printmaking LSAD (LIT) will officially launch the exhibition at 8pm on Thursday 14th May.

From The Inside Out is an exhibition for which two very different artists have literally worked together, to fuse (and present) elements of their respective inner worlds.

As life is 'full of holes and failure and incapacity, and is self destructive and self creative' (Thomas Moore) they were both motivated by a desire to escape ...not into oblivion, but into the realms of the imagination, exploring an alternative reality. This collaborative aspect has been vital to the work in the exhibition. Both Ruaidhrí Lennon (born in Kilkenny) and Alissa Kleist (born in Amsterdam) had a physical input into each piece, making this show into a true meeting of skills and minds.

Of course this has not been an entirely struggle free method of production... but then “it is impossible to achieve the aim without suffering” (J.G. Bennett). Three impressive large black and white linocuts are featured, based on small drawings from the sketchbooks of both artists, which subsequently evolved into uncanny, otherworldly landscapes.

Transfigures” is a full-blown, life-size installation that began as a minute sketch, grew into a collage then a print and finally into 3-dimensional creatures consisting of wood, metal, light, and sound. They are the product of a process whereby the freedom of the interior world of the imagination merges with the reality of the physical world that we bodily inhabit.

For the artists (both of whom graduated from the Limerick School of Art and Design in 2008), this exhibition is one of many journeys from source to subject ... from the inside out.

The exhibition will run until 4th June 2009. For further information on this exhibition, please contact Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery at the details below. The gallery is open Monday to Friday 11am to 5.30pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm.

All are welcome. Admission is free.
