collographs and chine colle

This combined media workshop will involve a crossover between chine collé and collographs photocollographs and will focus on the use and layering of texture as well as colour.

Collographs involve the participant building textures on the surface of a plate while photocollographs involve peeling away fine layers of a photographic surface. Both types of print can be inked up as an etching. Chine collé, delicate thin papers that are placed between the printing paper and plate, introduces a layer of colour to the print.

Principles of abstract and their exploration through the medium of Collograph Printmaking

The 1st weekend will begin with a short lecture about different ideas of abstract art.

Participants will be encouraged to bring with them a short piece of text, an image or even an object that they find particularly pleasing to them and that they feel they would like to explore visually in a non representational or abstract manner.

The initial means of visual exploration will consist of a mixture of drawing, painting and collage. Visual emphasis being placed on the more abstract elements of colour, shape, line, pattern and texture, and the composition or structure of these elements within the rectangle .

The aim over the two day period being to produce a number of small scale studies that explore qualities inherent in the chosen source and the possibilities that arise out of the materials and mediums being used. One important goal being the creation of a piece that the participant feels has the potential to be processed into a collograph print. This ultimate goal being an important parameter of consideration particularly on the second day of working.

The 2nd weekend will deal more with the practicalities and processes involved with the translation of the chosen study into a single plate collograph print.
