Courses and classes are run in the studio and gallery for the general public and range from etching, drypoint, lithography, collograph and woodblock printing, to drawing, painting, portfolio preparation, art and crafts. They are for all age groups, adults and children, can be adapted for various levels of skill or experience and are available weekly or over an intensive period.    

Limerick Printmakers welcome any enquiries from individuals or groups with an interest in participating in courses or workshops.  Over the years Limerick Printmakers have held a number of printmaking workshops and art and craft workshops. They have been held not only in the studio but also in a variety of locations from schools to libraries and have all proved extremely successful.

All materials are provided and a 10% discount is available for a 2nd child from the same family. All children's courses are taught in the gallery space with a fully trained teacher and teaching assistant in place. 

Limerick Printmakers have a child protection policy in place in accordance with recommended guidelines. Please contact the studio for further details.

Limerick Printmakers now offer open access to people who have achieved a level of printmaking through courses or classes and who wish to use the facilities with supervision.

life drawing

Evening drawing sessions with a life model. The session is a mixture of short and long poses and artists are welcome to contribute ideas for the poses. This is not a taught session.

This copperplate-etching course will cover a variety of etching techniques such as line and tone. Focus is on proofing and editioning and is a must for anyone who would like to develop their professional practice as a printmaker. 

Niall Naessens was born in Dublin in 1961. He is a graduate of the National College of Art and Design. He has a long association with the Graphic Studio Dublin and was a director between 2001 and 2006. He more recently set up, and now manages, Cló Cill Rialaig (print workshop) on behalf of the Cill Rialaig Project. Although primarily a printmaker he also paints. He is a figurative landscape artist with a particular interest in the sea. Naessens now lives in Brandon in West Kerry with his wife and family.

These sessions are suitable for advanced etchers and participants are asked to bring a  previously etched plate to the course. They will focus on developing a second plate for multiple plate printing and colour techniques.

T-shirt printing - silkscreen

getting ready to load the screen with ink and print print with three colours and its screen silkscreen printing using photo shop to prepare imagery for stencils 

This silkscreen course will cover printing onto fabric, in particular t-shirts although other types of material will be also included. Participants will use their own design and images and transfer them onto screens before printing directly onto their fabric. Participants will also learn about the care and use of screens, materials and equipment and view a selection of work printed at the studios.

photo etching

In these workshops, with artist Suzannah O’Reilly, participants will learn how to make a photo etching without the use of acid. This weekend course will cover preparing the copper plate, application of light sensitive film, making the image transparent for exposure, and exposing the image onto the plate. Any type of image can be used whether it is hand drawn, photocopied or a photograph.  Inking, wiping and printing as well as registration and paper types will also be covered.

monoprint

Ink is rolled out onto a smooth surface, called a plate,  with areas wiped away to produce an image. Paper is placed on top of the plate and is rolled through an etching press to print it. This workshop will focus on printing multiple layers of colour and will also look at the use of texture in monoprint.

lithography

This stone lithography course is a good introduction to litho. Participants will focus on drawing on the stone using a variety of greasy materials such as crayons and tusche washes. They will then learn how to process the stone and will print their first edition.
