Courses and classes are run in the studio and gallery for the general public and range from etching, drypoint, lithography, collograph and woodblock printing, to drawing, painting, portfolio preparation, art and crafts. They are for all age groups, adults and children, can be adapted for various levels of skill or experience and are available weekly or over an intensive period.    

Limerick Printmakers welcome any enquiries from individuals or groups with an interest in participating in courses or workshops.  Over the years Limerick Printmakers have held a number of printmaking workshops and art and craft workshops. They have been held not only in the studio but also in a variety of locations from schools to libraries and have all proved extremely successful.

All materials are provided and a 10% discount is available for a 2nd child from the same family. All childrens courses are taught in the gallery space with a teacher and assistant in place. 

Limerick Printmakers have a child protection policy in place in accordance with recommended guidelines. Please contact the studio for further details.

life drawing Evening drawing sessions with a life model. The session is a mixture of short and long poses and artists are welcome to contribute ideas for the poses. This is not a taught session.  course 1 date....tbc   day Tuesday course 2 date... tbc   day Thursday  time 8.30 to 10pm duration 10 weeks no of places 12 prices €150   top collograph Collographs involve the participant building textures on the surface of a plate. This type of print can be inked up as an etching or rolled up as a relief print. Chine collé, delicate thin papers that are placed between the printing paper and plate, introduces a layer of colour to the print as well as through traditional inking methods. course date... tbc   Tutor Deirdre Gallagher day Wednesday  time 10am to 12noon duration 6 weeks no of places 6 prices €200   top etching This copperplate-etching course will cover a variety of etching techniques such as line, tone and texture using the methods of hard & soft ground and aquatint.  Other methods of print can be combined in this class such as collographs, where textures are built up on the surface of the plate, and chine collé, where delicate thin papers are placed between the printing paper and the copper plate. Beginners/intermediate  21 & 22 Nov             tutor  Mary O'Dea        time 10am to 5pm, 1 hour lunch duration one weekend no. of places 6 price  €200 (50 % discount for studio members) top photo etching    In these workshops, with artist Suzannah O’Reilly, participants will learn how to make a photo etching without the use of acid. This weekend course will cover preparing the copper plate, application of light sensitive film, making the image transparent for exposure, and exposing the image onto the plate. Any type of image can be used whether it is hand drawn, photocopied or a photograph.  Inking, wiping and printing as well as registration and paper types will also be covered.  course 1 date.... 4 & 2 July                 tutor  Suzannah O'Reilly course 2 date.... 5 & 6 Dec                 tutor  Suzannah O'Reilly day  Saturday and Sunday time  10am to 5pm, 1 hour lunch duration  weekend no. of places 5 price €210 (50 % discount for studio members) top monoprint     Ink is rolled out onto a smooth surface, called a plate,  with areas wiped away to produce an image. Paper is placed on top of the plate and is rolled through an etching press to print it. This workshop will focus on printing multiple layers of colour and will also look at the use of texture in monoprint. course date.... Beginners 17 & 18 Oct             tutor Fiona Quill day Friday and Saturday  time 10 am -5pm, lunch 1 hour duration 2 days  no. of places 8 price €210 (50 % discount for studio members) top collographs and chine collé       This combined media workshop will involve a crossover between chine collé,  collographs and photocollographs and will focus on the use and layering of texture as well as colour. Collographs involve the participant building textures on the surface of a plate while photocollographs involve peeling away fine layers of a photographic surface. Both types of print can be inked up as an etching. Chine collé, delicate thin papers that are placed between the printing paper and plate, introduces a layer of colour to the print. Course 1....9 & 10 May            Tutor Clare Gilmour  day Saturday & Sunday time 10am to 5pm duration 2 full days no. of places 6 Price €200 (50 % discount for studio members) top drypoint   In this workshop sharp objects such as nails, scribers or even sandpaper can be used to scratch into and mark the surface of the aluminium plate. When inked these marks print with a rich velvety line. In this workshop drypoint are combined with the fantastic rich colour and textural layering of monoprint. course date 23 & 24 May       tutor Fiona Quill day Saturday & Sunday time 10am to 5pm duration weekend no. of places 6 price €210 (50 % discount for studio members) top   mezzotint  Mezzotint prints are made by covering the surface of a copper plate with a pattern of fine textured dots. These dots are then smoothed or burnished back in areas to either give a tonal effect or a clear white when printed. Participants will focus on drawing on the stone using a variety of greasy materials such as crayons and tusche washes. They will then learn how to process the stone and will print their first edition. course 1 date 25 & 26 July       tutor tbc course 1 date 7 & 8 Nov       tutor tbc day Saturday & Sunday time 10am to 5pm duration weekend no. of places 6 price €220 (50 % discount for studio members)   top photo lithography In this course participants work directly onto sensitised aluminium lithography plates either with hand drawn imagery or with photocopied or digitally printed imagery. They will work through the stage of processing the plate and then print their first edition in the workshop.  course date  8 & 9 Aug      tutor tbc day Saturday & Sunday time 10am to 5pm duration weekend no. of places 6 price €220 (50 % discount for studio members)   top relief print This weekend course will cover relief print using the traditional method of woodblock print and will focus on the method of three colour reduction printing. Using medite participants will cut into the block, removing some areas to leave others in relief, which will then have ink rolled across them. The block is then printed in the first colour. This process is repeated each time for each colour until the image has been made. Although participants will use the etching press to print their blocks this process is also suitable for printing at home with hand rollers.  course date  12 & 13 Sept      tutor tbc day Saturday & Sunday time 10am to 5pm duration weekend no. of places 6 price €220 (50 % discount for studio members) top   monoprint, drypoint and collograph This week long intensive course will start with monoprint, looking at colour layering, while the drypoint element introduces mark making and the collograph element looks at the use of texture. Participants will also learn about the care and use of screens, materials and equipment and study a selection of work printed at the studios.  course date 13 - 17 July      tutor tbc day Monday to Friday time 10am to 5pm duration 5 full days no. of places 4 price €400 (discount available if one or two more summer courses are booked together for the same participant)  top   etching and photoetching This copperplate-etching course covers an introduction to line and tone and the use of hard ground and aquatint.  The course will then look at introducing photo etching where hand drawn, photographic or photocopied images can be transferred to the copper plate using image-on.
