Voices from the Soul Cage Collective

25th February – 19th March 2010

Gavin Hogg: new works

Limerick Printmakers are delighted to present Voices from the Soul Cage Collective, an exhibition of new works by Gavin Hogg on Thursday the 25th February at 8pm, which will run until Friday the 19th March.

In this solo exhibition, Gavin Hogg presents us with seventeen new works, including paintings and prints.  The works are sumptuous pieces with bands of colour, rhythmic patterns and are woven in symbolic imagery.

All of Hogg’s works are meticulously planned through the use of the grid system, but it does not dominate the work, it is the starting point but not the end result. Despite this careful structuring, the works have a flow and freedom to them that disputes their planned nature.  In his painting The Sea Inside (Malevolent Feminine) we can see vibrant oranges and soaked turquoises with the imagery of Circe while in the print Like a Memory we see muted autumnal colours.

Hogg is intrigued with the language of visual art and the capacity a piece of work has to communicate with a viewer. He is very much interested in the physical presence of a piece, it’s tactile and sensual qualities, but also it’s imaginative intangibility.

Gavin Hogg a long time Limerick resident divides his time between Ireland and Spain. He studied Painting in Limerick School of Art and Design and went on to achieve a Masters in Fine Art from the Birmingham Institute of Art. Since then he has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and his work is held by many public and private collections both at home and abroad. This includes the Surihov Academy of Art, Moscow, Russia; New York Public Library Print Collection and The Hunt Museum, Limerick to name a few.

Hogg has exhibited solo in many locations including the University of Limerick; The Glebe Gallery, Co. Donegal; Green on Red Gallery, Dublin; Belltable Arts Centre, (print show) Limerick and South’s Bar, New York.

His group exhibitions include; Lyric/Printmakers 10 yr. Box Set X, Impressions, Print Open, Arts Centre, Galway; Two person with John Shinnors, Hunt Museum, Limerick; Harper Selects, McBride Gallery, Killarney, Co. Kerry and Cead in China, Irish art touring exhibition, China.

The exhibition will run until 19th March 2010. For further information please go to www.gavinhogg.com or contact Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery at the details below. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 11am to 5.30pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm.
